We've seen how strong you can be, now we need your help.

If you are one of the millions in our community who have trained with us, practiced with us, or sought our help please add your name here and show your support. We hope to weather this crisis together.

Our coalition has created a letter to various levels of government outlining our needs in this crisis. Businesses and practitioners across the industry are signing on to our formal letter.

We aren’t asking you to sign the formal letter, but simply to show your support for our industry by adding your name here. Adding your name in support, makes our voice even stronger.

Please add your name and feel free to let us know why you are supporting health and wellness practitioners.

As a member of our community, you would be the first to know that our businesses have been required to shut down in the fight against the spread of COVID-19 with no option of working from home. Many of us have been working hard to find solutions to keep you fit and healthy during your self-isolation with Zoom workouts and messages of encouragement. But this alone can't keep us afloat, and we are suffering under the weight of our rents.

The health and wellness industry plays a significant role in improving the physical and mental health of Canadian residences, employs thousands of workers, and represents a significant economic and social infrastructure; however, to date there has been no indication from government entities of plans for bailouts or additional support for business owners, operators and our workers.

The mental health and social benefits provided by health and wellness types of businesses cannot be understated, and the loss of businesses and healthcare workers that offer an outlet for people and a ‘home-away-from-home’ would have a devastating ripple effect across multiple other sectors. We play a crucial piece in the fight against COVID-19. At a time where Canadian’s mental health is so fragile, our industry’s work will help provide relief to the already heavily burdened healthcare workers.

Supporting Canadians to fight anxiety, depression and help them to recover from this traumatic time will in return increase workforce productivity and lower healthcare costs. When we beat this pandemic, we want to be there for you. But we need help.

"The impact of COVID 19 has been far-reaching. In addition to the business, our trainers (staff) and members (customers) have all been uprooted.”
—Greg Hetherington, Founder of Fuel

Mental health is so important and people need physical exercise. All I ask is you treat all business equally and factor in all risks by keeping businesses closed.

We need to have a space to release after a full day of work, especially now!!! Being at home 24/7 the studios were a place we can go for 45min to 60min to 30min of just being in a safe space to release mentally and physically!!!

Gyms should be deemed an essential service for mental, physical and health reasons. If the following procedures are followed by gyms strictly, then gyms can be a safer place than grocery stores.

Masks must be worn properly (even covering your nose) at all times in a gym – that is when not working out, when exercising and in change rooms. Masks should only be removed safely when you need a drink of water.

Limit the number of people in a gym, so for a big gym 50 people. For smaller gyms, fewer people.

Use of hand sanitizer when entering the gym.

Wipe down machines before and after use.

Use your own clean towel on the machines if you have one.

For cardio classes increase the space for people to 3 meters.

Physical fitness is mental health. Period. Taking that away in a time when people need it most is detrimental.

Fitness is an essential service for our mental health and well-being. These boutique studios have been unfairly closed with no concrete data supporting their shutdown.

The virus is more likely to effect you if you aren’t mentally stable (in turn stress release in your body affecting your nervous system immune system) and/or lack physical activity (or mainly have an existing underlined health issue!). Why gyms were ever considered being shut down is a wonder to me.

Because access to places and instructors that promote good health is more important than ever. Because people who have poured their lives and livelihoods into their businesses, creating a better experience for everyone else should not be forced to close because of fear-based decisions when there have been very few cases at gyms. These closures are not sustainable nor healthy, and feel arbitrary.

Gyms and community fitness centres are a vital part of health and wellness. Especially with the colder and darker months, it is important for us to stay active to keep our spirits up. I agree with the points made by this group: they are supporting Canadians mentally and physically by helping us navigate this difficult time— to help maintain a healthier workforce and lower healthcare costs— which has direct, positive impact to our economy.

I benefit from group fitness and like the environment there. I am better when I workout in a safe clean location and I have a right to chose if I want to go. If so didn’t feel safe or thought I was compromising my health or my families, I would stay home. Not a fair or right decision to close down gyms.

I can attest to the physical and mental health benefits of participating in Pilates, Yoga and other movement classes for myself and for the Senior clients I work with. Now, more than ever, we need the dedicated practitioners of the health and wellness industry to be supported so that they can support us.

They are vital to keeping us healthy and strong. It’s pretty self/explanatory. It blows my mind how our government leaders advocate healthy living, then cut off access to a vital means to achieve healthy living.
