I am an RMT who rents a room close to downtown Oakville and have been recommended by our regulatory body to not work as of March 16th when social distancing became in effect. I am currently unable to pay my operating expenses like rent and booking system as I have no income coming in for work and need relief!

Our member fees pay our rent and the wages for our small staff. As an owner I don’t have a salary right now since we are trying to pay off our loan. I don’t qualify for CERB and I am not prepared to take on more debt when we have no idea of when we may possibly re-open if we are able.

Unique Small businesses are falling through the cracks of the government resposne.. and will end up paying a disproportionately large share of Covid cost.

I am concerned about rent and operating cost because my business is hands on I will be one of the last business introduced back in after COVID 19 the not knowing when or if I can afford to keep things going is very stressful and adding a loan to keep me afloat scars me it cost me over 6,500 to keep things going CLOSED I have been using a line of cr to keep a float if I get the 40,000 emergency line it would keep me for 4 more months but then when and if I can continue my business I will have to pay my bills and pay off the loan no way I can pay it off in a year so now I would be paying 5% on that loan and keeping bills and employee payroll don’t know what to do been in business for 23 yrs hate to loss it

We need to have a plan when to open the business and help with payment of rents

As a sole proprietor running a wellness practice (psychotherapy and reiki), my office is closed, rent is due, governments are bailing out large corporations (who have wealth and assets they can leverage) while we are forced to acquire debt to continue on and I won’t stand for it.

We voluntarily shut down early March and the owners pledged to take $0 home to make sure all of our coaches & staff were paid for the next few months. Fortunately, the CERB kicked in, but other expenses (lease, utilities, insurance, equipment financing, software subscriptions, etc.) continued with virtually no revenue. We are self funded (mortgaged our house), and our team is mainly contractors, so we’re not eligible for the CEBA loan. We predict it will be even more challenging when we open again as we are a semi-private facility, which will cripple the business and make it unaffordable for our athletes.

Being labeled a non-essential service has been devastating not only due to the financial losses but also because I know we can assist so many who are suffering from not only physical aches and pains but the emotional and mental support we provide the community with manual therapy and exercise prescription. This unfortunate situation has brought attention that the health and wellness industry needs an actual seat and voice. Thank you very much for initiating this conversation.

Thank you Jen and the Fit Squad team for leading this initiative. It has been challenging not being able to help our communities. I hope we can all get through this together so we can all go back to what we love doing – helping our communities get better!

I run my own small business and rent space from gyms. Since they are not open I have also had to stop running my classes. I also work for gyms as an instructor and have lost those jobs due to closure. Health and wellness services are crucial for physical and mental health as well as creating a community and sense of belonging. As well all grow more sedentary we need these services to help keep us healthy placing less burden on the health care system and less sick days at work. This has been my life’s work and passion. I and the collective we need these services to be around to be healthy, productive citizens that are able to give to our society.

I am a recreation consultant, who currently has an Alberta based survey looking at the COVID-19 impacts for private fitness and recreation providers. This information is being forwarded to the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (as I am a board member). I will also be using the study for a presentation at the 2020 ARPA Conference. It might be useful to connect as I can share the information with you and possibly promote each other to ensure the voices of the private fitness sector are not lost. I have sent an email to the AFLCA sharing some of the preliminary responses from their members of the ways the AFLCA can help.

We closed March 16th and subsequently laid off our entire team. I would like to be able to hire some back ASAP without incurring new debt.
