The Ontario boutique fitness studios have been unfairly targeted by government shutdowns. We implore the government to work with our sector and our small-business owners to better protect Ontarians and re-open this essential service at this critical moment.
On Tuesday April 21st, we hosted a Town Hall for the health and wellness industry with the Federal Leader of the NDP Jagmeet Singh. Watch it on YouTube here.
The health and wellness industry is in crisis. Our businesses have been required to shut down in the fight against the spread of COVID-19. The industry plays a critical role in the fight against COVID-19 by improving the physical and mental health of Canadian residents, making them more likely to fight off infection, and better equipped to endure the difficulties of prolonged social distancing.
We represent coaches, personal trainers, group instructors, yoga instructors, pilates instructors, chiropractors, physiotherapists, massage therapists, acupuncturists and sports and recreation centers and staff. From business owners to independent contractors, we are all struggling to survive this crisis without adequate government support.
We employ thousands of workers, and represent a significant economic and social construct. However, unlike other industries, to date there has been no indication from government entities of plans for support for the business owners, operators and our workers fighting to keep Canadians healthy every day.
We have a letter to various levels of government outlining our demands and the needs of our industry in this crisis. You can see our full letter here.
If you are a business or independent contractor in our industry and would like to join our coalition by adding your name to our letter - click here to join us. A united voice will be instrumental in weathering this crisis together.
If you are one of the millions in our community who have trained with us, practiced with us, or sought our help please add your name here and show your support. We hope to weather this crisis together.
"I worry every day. I worry for our members. I worry for our staff. I worry for our future. I worry about getting through this but I also worry about what our business will look like on the other side.”
—Dr. Alexander St. Pierre, Founder of Strong and Strong Therapy Toronto
The benefits provided to Canadians by health and wellness businesses cannot be understated. Losing the small to medium enterprises and healthcare workers that offer both an outlet for people and a ‘home-away-from-home’, would have a devastating ripple effect across multiple other sectors, as well as to the emotional and physical health of Canadians as a whole.
To date, our industry has demonstrated tremendous tenacity and resilience through the fast moving shift to the online space where we continue to provide the necessity of our service to Canadians.
When this crisis abates, we need to be here. At a time where every Canadian's mental health is so important, our industry's work will help provide relief to the already heavily burdened healthcare workers. We offer a much-needed crutch for people unable to leave their homes, as well as keeping them physically healthier. We support Canadians as they fight anxiety and depression, helping them recover from this traumatic period and in time increasing the productivity of a returning workforce and lowering healthcare costs.
